"Time waits for no man," nor for anything else in this physical world we live in. As the years march on, this is a reality of which I am becoming increasingly aware. The passing of time is explored in each of the series of photographs shown here, but on different scales, ranging from minutes to months.
For A Milkweed Story: Promise and Loss, the same milkweed flower cluster was photographed over a period of three months, from which eight photographs were selected to make up the final work. The title refers to my expectation that 'the story' would end with one or more milkweed pods bursting open with a profusion of silky seeds. Instead the one pod that remained shrivelled up and died without producing any seeds.
Instances of a Reflection is a series of five images showing the reflection of a leafless branch at different times during a 45-minute photo session on a tripod. In just a few seconds, with just the slightest breath of wind, the reflection could be transformed into something quite new.
Steps in Time examines how the facade of a building changes its appearance over a period of about one hour around sunset. These four images were selected from about a dozen that were taken at approximately five-minute intervals throughout the hour.
In Life of a Daisy, twelve photographs of the same daisy have been selected from a much larger number taken over a period of about two months. The background of each of the images has been digitally altered to provide the equivalent of a series of 'studio portraits' of the daisy at various stages in its life.
The earliest series, Manitoulin Escarpment in Different Seasons is a series of four photographs, giving views of the same tree-covered escarpment on Manitoulin Island at various stages throughout the year.
